Congratulations

Congratulations to Professor Mary Wells who has been affiliated with SDHI for several years. Mary has been appointed Professor of Cancer Nursing Research & Practice at the Nursing Midwifery and Allied Health Professions Research Unit (NMAHP RU) at the University of Stirling. She will work closely with former SDHI director and now NMAHP RU director, Professor Brian Williams. We wish Mary all the best in her new post and look forward to new collaborative opportunities.

We also like to congratulate Professor Graeme Hutton on his recent promotion. Graeme is an award winning architect and has been a Reader at the University of Dundee before being awarded a Personal Chair this week. He is Associate Dean and Head of Architecture and Planning at the University of Dundee. Graeme is co-organising with SDHI and the Geddes Institute for Urban Research a symposium on the 27th June, entitled ‘CARE SPACE: Future Designs for Wellbeing’.

Further congratulations go to Dr Caroline Bradbury-Jones who has been promoted to Senior Lecturer and will shortly be taking up a new position at the University of Manchester, School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work.

Participation and Engagement in Research: challenges and opportunities

The School of Nursing & Midwifery’s ‘Addressing Inequalities Research Theme’ is hosting a 2 hour discussion event on the challenges and opportunities for participation and engagement in research.

Invited speakers Dr Terry Barber (School of Education, Social Work and Community Education) and Dr Bridget Johnston (School of Nursing & Midwifery) will be sharing their experiences and exploring ideas around the subject.

This is the first of a series of cross-university activities organised be the team that aim to contribute to the debate about research into inequalities.

The activity is open to all.

The complexities of domestic abuse disclosure: a new publication

A new publications by Taylor, Bradbury-Jones, Kroll and Duncan details the findings from a two-phase, qualitative study (initial findings were presented as an SDHI webinar) that was conducted with women who had domestic abuse experiences and health professionals in Scotland. Domestic abuse is a serious public health concern. However, little is known about health professionals’ beliefs about domestic abuse disclosure and how these interact with abused women’s experiences. Most research in this area has largely been a-theoretical. This study was theoretically informed by the Common Sense Model of Self-Regulation of Health and Illness (CSM), which typically has been used to study belief-behaviour interactions in disease-orientated research. Findings expose the dynamic interaction between women’s and health professionals’ beliefs about domestic abuse and their behaviour that affect the readiness to respond to it. New collaborative PhD applications invited by Scottish Graduate School of Social Sciences Doctoral Training Centres

In partnership with Skills Development Scotland up to 4 co-funded PhD awards have just been announced across the SGS-DTC for the 2013/14 academic year. Expressions of interest need to be sent to studentships@socsciscotland.ac.uk by 17 May 2013 with the deadline for full applications to be 7 June 2013.

Understanding the challenges associated with compound caregiving responsibilities

In a one hour Webinar, Professor Liz Perkins from the University of South Florida discussed the complexities involved in compound caregiving responsibilities. Elisabeth Perkins is also the Associate Director of the Florida Center for Inclusive Communities. In her presentation she focused on the situation of ageing parents of people with learning disabilities who may adopt additional caregiving roles and responsibilities for spouses or other relatives. The multi-layered circumstances do not only involve difficult decisions but frequently prolonged periods of physical and emotional stress – especially when additional caregivers or assistants are not available – with the potential of compromising health and wellbeing and ultimately functioning of the caregivers. Workshop – Interventions for increasing physical activity and reducing sedentary behaviour

This 2-day residential interactive workshop will be held on 27 and 28 May at Dunblane Hydro where participants will work together to create new research ideas around sustaining behaviour change, promoting physical activity (PA) and reducing sedentary behaviour.
